Savannah Day 2

Yesterday we explored the historic district of Savannah.  Today, we spent time in the more contemporary Uptown section, where the buildings look like this:

Josh wanted to sleep in a bit, so I started the day at The Coffee Fox, a funky coffee shop.  The super-chill baristas there introduced me to horchata for the first time.  I had heard of horchata before, but wasn't really sure what it was, since I had only heard about it from that song by Vampire Weekend, and a scene from an episode of American Dad (If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about.  If you haven't seen it, there's no reason to see it so don't even go looking for "horchata scene American Dad" on Youtube to try to figure out what I'm talking about because I already did and I couldn't find it, but also it's totally gross so don't).  Anyway, bottom line: horchata is delicious.
I had read online that the Paris Market & Brocante was a must-see.  It definitely did not disappoint. I studied abroad in Paris when I was in college, so I have a soft spot in my heart for anything Paris-related.

Treat yo'self

I noticed a lot of cool and artsy chalkboard signs outside of the boutiques.  This area is about a 5-10-minute walk from the Savannah College of Art and Design, so I bet a lot of the students work here.

This one spoke to me on a personal level.

After shopping, we headed to the City Market for some good ol'-fashioned Georgia peach... sangria?

And then back to Miss Tilly to pack up and head out of town.  I thought I was just getting a cute picture of Josh on our way out, but as a bonus, you can also see the guy behind him spitting into the street.

We drove for several hours and got almost down to the Florida-Georgia border this evening. We're staying in a Walmart parking lot tonight.  Someone in another car is blaring "Bottoms Up" by Brantley Gilbert at 100% volume and there is definitely a drag race going on. We are so not in Boston anymore.

Savannah

Hi everyone!
It has been a week since my last post. Why? Reasons. Reasons that include several Tilly breakdowns, a few days of sunup-to-sundown driving, and a hellacious stomach flu that left me completely incapacitated for days.  I will totally write about the past week's adventures in the near future, but for now, I want to tell you about our current city: beautiful Savannah, Georgia!
Actually, before I go into the Southern fairy dreamland that is Savannah, has anyone tried boiled peanuts?  They sound awful, but they're actually pretty good.

You know they're going to be good when you buy them from some guy on the side of the road selling them out of a cardboard shack.

Savannah is a decently-sized city just over the South Carolina-Georgia border.  It's the oldest city in the state of Georgia.  It is absolutely gorgeous here.  Josh and I arrived here mid-afternoon after leaving Edisto Beach, SC, this morning.  We parked Tilly at the Savannah Welcome Center and set off on the Love Bug.  We drove through the northern part of the city and by Forsyth Park.  We stopped at a small coffee shop so Josh could get some work done.

While he was working, I took a walk around the Victorian Historic District and saw some beautiful houses.

They are all so colorful and ornate!  When I lived in Boston I worked at a building product company for two years (hello to any Harvey BP people who are reading!), so I know a fair amount about construction and building.  The building style here is SO DIFFERENT from that in the greater Boston area.  No vinyl siding!  No Fiberglass doors!  So many front porches!  Everything is colorful and beautifully decorated, and I just love it.  Also, the vegetation is surprisingly tropical. We started seeing palm trees once we got into South Carolina, so logically it makes sense that the plants would get more lush the further south we get, but I was still shocked to see such amazing greenery here.

We ate dinner at a bar/restaurant called The Distillery, which has an impressive selection of craft beers and some kickass tomato soup.

Josh got a beer sampler platter that came with a scorecard to rank each beer.

His refined palate detects notes of "cloudy pee", "Guinness-y", and "beer"

We also peeked into the Savannah College of Art and Design Museum courtyard, but it was sadly closed.

We might try to get in tomorrow morning if we have time, though.
